When Will The Meadow Lark Open in Trumpington?

The Meadow Lark, the pub formerly known as The Lord Byron Inn in Trumpington, opens its doors on Tuesday 1st December 2026.

If you’ve walked past on Church Lane and wondered what’s going on, here’s everything you need to know.

Is The Lord Byron Inn Now The Meadow Lark?

Yes, and we couldn’t be happier about it. The Lord Byron Inn is stepping into a new chapter as The Meadow Lark, our first Heartwood Inn in Cambridgeshire.

Same much-loved spot on Church Lane, with a new name, a fresh look and a warm welcome waiting for you.

Where Does the Name The Meadow Lark Come From?

The Meadow Lark takes its name from Trumpington Meadows and the skylark, a familiar bird of the open countryside. It felt like a name that belongs here.

This spot has worn a few names over the years. It began as The Unicorn in the 1840s, then became The Lord Byron Inn in May 2012, a nod to nearby Byron’s Pool, where the poet is reputed to have swum while studying at Trinity College.

Whatever it’s been called, it has always been a place for the village to meet, eat and drink.

A Lot of History Worth Raising a Glass To

Church Lane has been home to a pub for the best part of two centuries. Deeds held by Trinity Hall show a building on this site going back to at least the 1540s.

By 1858, The Unicorn was recorded as a beer house, and it soon became a hub for village life. Victorian landlords came and went, and the pub kept its place at the heart of Trumpington.

Trumpington Bowls Club played on the green beside the pub from around 1920 until 1953. It’s always been a place for neighbours, clubs and good company, and we’d like to keep it that way.

What to Expect From Our Refurbishment

The Meadow Lark is being refurbished from top to bottom. You’ll find a warm welcome, a proper local feel and the same fresh, seasonal, sustainable food you’ll find at every Heartwood Inn.

Our kitchen holds a three-star ‘Food Made Good’ rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association. That’s about as good as it gets when it comes to responsible, high-quality cooking.

19 Boutique Bedrooms in Trumpington

The Meadow Lark is becoming a pub with rooms, with 19 bedrooms. It’s the first Heartwood Inn to open in Cambridgeshire, so we’re rather excited.

It’s the perfect base for exploring Grantchester Meadows, the Cambridge Backs and the Gog Magog Hills. Book directly with us and you’ll enjoy our Book Direct Promise, which means the best available prices and late check-out as standard.

Is The Meadow Lark Dog-Friendly?

It is, and we’re delighted about it. Dogs get free water and treats on arrival, and our dog-friendly bedrooms come with a thoughtful Digby Dog Pack to make their stay as comfortable as yours.

Muddy paws after a walk by the river? Absolutely welcome.

What’s Nearby to The Meadow Lark?

From The Meadow Lark, you’re perfectly placed for a stroll along the river to Grantchester Meadows or a wander round Trumpington Meadows. Byron’s Pool is a quiet walk away.

Cambridge’s historic colleges are close by too, so a spot of punting on the River Cam is firmly on the menu.
